Messenger Kids Dark Mode

Since its inception, Messenger Kids was a customizable space. Kids could select their favorite color from a wide color palette to make the app feel personalized. In 2020, it was time for this kids’ app to grow up a little. In comes “Dawn.” A new era for Messenger Kids; out with the brightly colored tiles, in comes adult Messenger’s stark whiteness.

While the redesign proved to be a success for mobile users, the loss of customization and the brightness of the minimal aesthetic made it all the more necessary that we introduce a dark mode feature as the first steps towards true customization.

My Involvement

I remixed all of the design system’s color palette for dark mode to match the spirit and accessibility of light mode. I worked with engineering to lay the ground work for the semantic naming conventions that would allow for theme customization in the future.
